So it's official: Sulli has left and is no longer a member of f(x).
The reason I feel like I need to cover this is yes, it's something big that's happened in the kpop universe but also because f(x) is one of my bias groups. They're my second favorite girl group in all and my favorite girl group in SM.
To answer to some curious people, no, I'm not crying or is in despair because my unnie left the group. I'm actually never really upset when members decide to leave their groups to do other things or move on with their lives.
If you already didn't know, Sulli never wanted to be an idol..... she wanted to be an actress. She was a child actress before she entered SM. She even did a wonderful job as portraying Gu JaeHee in To the Beautiful You.
But like most smart entertainment companies, they believe if you become an idol before you debut as an actor/actress, you already have one foot out the door. A similar situation happened with Wonder Girls' Sohee. She left JYP since she wanted to pursue her acting career. Basically the same thing without the depression, cancelled promotions, and whole year of waiting for her official departure. Many idols end up doing this because their companies promise them acting gigs during their time as an idol. A lot of these companies don't end up giving these opportunities so they pack their bags up and leave. Look at Kris and Lu Han from EXO. Kris honestly wasn't that great of a dancer or rapper. Why? Because he entered SM to become an actor and with his 2 and 1/2 years with EXO, I don't remember him having any acting roles. Same thing with Lu Han. Yea he liked to sing and dance but he also wanted to do other things which included acting. Nicole and Jiyoung of KARA also left DSP Media because they weren't given too many opportunities outside of KARA. Sometimes idols have to leave their companies if they're not showing their full potential in it. Now, back to Sulli:
Even though f(x) is my one of my bias groups, I'm not upset or regretful or angry that Sulli left. In fact, I'm happy for her. She was clearly depressed in f(x) ever since the Rum Pum Pum era but that doesn't necessarily mean her unhappiness was caused by being in f(x). I think it's just the pressure of being an idol that's caused her to break down a little. Now to the important part: analyzing the effects of her departure.
Cons
- f(x) losing one of it's prime members. f(x) was the only group besides SHINee that still had their original lineup. Now it's only SHINee.
- No more hearing Sulli's voice in albums or seeing her perform on music stages.
- f(x) losing fans because of Sulli's departure
- Sulli losing fans and getting hate because of her depature. K-fans get pretty deep into their fandoms so if an idol breathes or something they go crazy. Imagine one of their favorite idols leaving their group. Ultimate betrayal in their eyes.
- f(x) losing a visual. Krystal's the face and Sulli's the visual. Naturally, the prettier members tend to be more popular and from experience we know SM tends to pay attention to the prettier/more handsome members of their groups. f(x) is already neglected how it is so now their definitely gonna be more neglected.
Pros but mostly hope for the future since SM can't do anything right:
- Victoria getting more lines. Everyone knows the Chinese leader masters the art of dance but we barely get enough time to hear her voice in comebacks and on albums. With Sulli gone, there's no excuse for SM to not give Victoria more lines considering there's one less member and one less person to give lines to.
- Sulli's acting career. As I mentioned before, Sulli is an amazing actress and even though I liked her in f(x), I would rather see her in dramas since that seems to be her thing and she's actually good at it compared to a lot of other idol actors. I don't watch K-dramas that often but if Sulli was in 30 of them, I guess I'm watching 30 dramas then.
- More advanced and harder dance moves for f(x). Out of all of the SM groups, f(x) had the easiest and most boring dances ever. The only dance moves of theirs that I could say is catchy and memorable was the one for "Electric Shock" and that remains the only f(x) dance that I know most of/all the moves to. Whether you want to believe it or not, Sulli was kind of holding the group back from harder dances. Victoria and Luna are dancing queens, Amber has swag and has done martial arts so she was bound to be a good dancer, and Krystal dances sharp with precision. Sulli, on the other hand, is average compared to them. With Sulli gone, they'll hopefully give them something harder.
Any way, I hope Sulli good luck in her future!
